October Faves

OCTOBER.jpg

Happy October everyone! This is probably my favorite month because I feel like it’s (finally!) truly fall. Here are some of the things I’m loving this month:

Apple Cider Candle- This candle smells sooo good and makes me feel like it’s fall! I love this brand of candles and use it as my go-to for gifts.

Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Bread- Ok, obviously there had to be something pumpkin on the list! I love baking with pumpkin in the fall. This pumpkin crumb cake recipe is my favorite but if I don’t have a lot of time, TJ’s doesn’t let me down!

J.Crew Gingham flats- I love these flats for transitioning to fall fashion. You may remember them from my gingham post. They are super cute with jeans and a button-down!

None Like Him by Jen Wilkin- I’ve been reading this with a book club of some close friends from DC and it is so good. Here’s an excerpt. Go get yourself a copy today!

Blogilates- For exercise, I either go for a jog with Allie in the stroller or do a few Blogilates videos. Her workout calendars make it so easy- the daily workout is already planned for me!

Winter Classics

Thankfully it’s been a mild winter in DC, but I can’t help but miss the beautiful hues of autumn. While I took these photos in late fall, this outfit features classics that work year round: black tee, pearls, dark wash jeans, and a simple heel. And in these dreary winer days, it’s easy to add some red lipstick or a pretty headband to jazz up your look!

We had a busy holiday season, and things haven’t slowed down much. The blog is on the back burner right now (between being a wife, new mom, working full time, church events, spending time with friends…who has time to blog?), so I’m not making any promises about regular posts, but will try to update every now and then. I keep reminding myself that this is just a season and the blog is a hobby, so there’s no need feel guilty! I’m hoping to a “coffee date” update soon. Until then, stay warm and enjoy the snow if you have it!

Sweater- Gap (similar) // Scarf- Old Navy // Jeans- J.Crew // Earrings- H&M // Bracelet- J.Crew (similar)// Boots- Steve Madden // Clutch- The Pink Azalea

Comfy sweater, plaid scarf, riding boots, Starbucks peppermint mocha – these are a few of my favorite things! I love fall, and style is definitely a huge part of that (the beautiful leaves don’t hurt, either!) My “fall uniform” usually consists of boots, jeans, a sweater, and a scarf.

I have a lot of scarves, so I held off on buying a blanket scarf for a long time. I was ordering online from Old Navy and needed to buy an additional small item to qualify for free shipping, so I decided to see if they had any reasonably priced blanket scarves. They didn’t in the women’s section, but the girls’ department did. After reading reviews (pretty much all which said that the scarf was full sized and was like a dress on their seven-year-old), I decided to buy it! I absolutely love it, and it pairs perfectly with a v-neck sweater I already had. New fall favorite? I think so.

Rocksbox Review & Free Jewelry!

rocksbox1

When I saw my favorite blogger post about getting free jewelry for a month, I knew I wanted in. Rocksbox is a new subscription service for jewelry, similar to Birchbox or Rent the Runway. They send you a box filled with three pieces of designer jewelry- I received a necklace, bracelet, and earrings in each set. If you really like a piece, you can buy it from them for a discounted price. After the free trial, it’s $19 a month and you can send back for another set of jewelry as often as you like with free shipping. If you decide it’s not for you, can can cancel after the trial period.

My thoughts? Definitely worth the free month! I have gotten so many compliments on jewelry I never would have been able to buy myself. I love how personalized everything is – the set comes in a bow-tied box containing a note with your name, and you can give feedback on each piece to help the stylists choose the jewelry that will go in your next box.

The first box was way too punk rock for me, though I wore the earrings by putting them in backwards to avoid them being double studs. I know a lot of bloggers like this trend, especially with pearl earrings, but it is definitely not my style! The necklace was great- simple and stylish, and I liked the bracelet as well.

The second box was definitely more my style. The statement necklace was very large and I’m not sure I would have chosen it for myself, but it was fun! (That’s the great thing about renting jewelry- you can try out new styles you wouldn’t buy yourself!) I got lots of compliments on it. And the bracelet – I wore it pretty much every day for a week straight. I asked for a Loren Hope piece on my first feedback and they gave me one! Props to you, Rocksbox. IF I had the money, I would definitely buy this bracelet- it goes with nearly everything! The earrings in this set were pretty, but not my style, so I didn’t wear them. I paired the bracelet and necklace with simple cz studs. I’m looking forward to seeing Rocksbox grow, and hopefully adding some less expensive options – maybe $10 for once piece and $15 for two?

Adventures in Shenandoah

camping_weekend_kinfolkThis was my inspiration picture for our camping trip last weekend. I imagined the weekend as crisp and cool in the mornings with sunny afternoons filled with hiking and lots of profile-worthy pictures. Reality was, it was freezing cold and raining and I came down with a horrible cold the first night. Not exactly as I pictured, but it was still SO worth it. Why? Because I was surrounded by three of my best friends, and we got to have some unexpected adventures (like visiting a giant cave) and long talks about Jesus (Sunday morning Emily led a devo on humility that was ON. POINT.)

Inspired by last weekend, here’s my list of camping essentials:

1) Eno hammock // Every hipster and REI denizen knows this is a staple. I have a doublenest that I bought Scott for his birthday, and we have enjoyed quite a few evenings in it reading waterfront near our apartment.

2) Plaid // If you didn’t wear plaid (especially of the flannel variety), it wasn’t real camping. Nuff said.

3) Comfy blanket // If it’s in the 40s or below, and your cabin has a space heater the size of a small dog, you will definitely want an extra layer.  A down comforter may not be the most space-efficient and you can still stay cozy and warm with a cute throw (or two).

4) Infinity Scarves // These are so great at keeping you warm during outdoor activities, and a chunky knit in a neutral goes with nearly every outfit.

5) Cards // If it rains, this is the perfectly sized go-to for games. There are an infinite amount of options (we played Kemps and ERS, my personal favorite).

6) Chapstick // Because undoubtedly your lips will get dry from the mountain air and there is no CVS within a 5 minute drive. And because using lotion as a chapstick substitute just doesn’t cut it sometimes.

Below are some highlights from our weekend:

Little Red Caboose

I’m all about classic preppy style – J.Crew, pearls, button downs tucked into skirts…but sometimes it’s fun to experiment with different styles. And there’s just something about fall that attracts me to darker colors, knit scarves, and chambray shirts.

I like to call this look “hipster chic”. Mostly because I’m obsessed with the word chic and I like to make fun of hipsters while actually trying to be like them.

How amazing are these scalloped shoes?! I almost returned them- crazy, I know. But I have gotten so many compliments on them and they work with nearly every outfit! Definitely my go-to pair right now.

Of course, I still wore my signature pearl earrings!

When I saw this caboose in my neighborhood for the first time, I knew I had to take pictures there! It is such an amazing prop, and really ties in with the style I was going for. There’s a cute little café aptly named The Caboose Cafe right across the street, and I’m excited to go there for a lunch date soon. I’ve heard such good things!

A huge thank you to my dear friend Emily, without whose help this blog would not be possible! She is amazing. Check out her portfolio here.
